Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to define and identify the concept of Hopelessness.

Methods: This study used Walker & Avant s process of concept analysis.

Results: Hopelessness can be defined by following attributes: 1) loss of hope 2) discouragement 3) self-abandonment 4) feelings of disability, powerlessness, continuing disappointment-abandon cycling. The antecedent factors of returning to work were : 1) facing unexpected circumstances for life 2) Inappropriate response and maladjustment of change in life 3) Loss of confidence due to a sense of uncertainty. There are consequences as a result of returnin to work: 1) abandonment 2) decreasing of quality of life 3) death drive 4) suicide attempts & suicide-complete.

Conclusion: It is believed that it has provided for some basic data useful to development of a proper and effective nursing intervention in hopelessness.
